The fine print, decoded
Fair Usage Policies (FUP & AUP) Explained
Uncapped doesn’t always mean unlimited at full speed. Every ISP publishes a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) or Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) — here is what each one actually says, in plain language, with a link to the official policy.
ISP Verdict What the policy says
Afrihost
Unshaped / Unthrottled
Afrihost Pure Fibre is truly uncapped — no throttling, no shaping and no usage thresholds, no matter how much you download. The only conditions are fair-use ones: the connection is for home use, so you can't resell it or run commercial servers on it. afrihost.com
Atomic Access
Unshaped / Unthrottled
Atomic's fibre is uncapped and unshaped, with no throttling, shaping or capping — ever. There are no hidden thresholds: if your usage is exceptionally heavy, Atomic will talk to you about options rather than slow you down. The line is for one home's personal use — no reselling, sharing between properties, or using it as backhaul. atomic.co.za
Axxess
Unshaped / Unthrottled
Axxess uncapped fibre is unshaped and unthrottled, with no usage thresholds — their Acceptable Use Policy states this in as many words. The connection is for home use only (no reselling, servers or WISP use), and Axxess reserves the right to manage users who place an unusually large burden on the network. axxess.co.za
Mweb
Unshaped / Unthrottled
Mweb's fibre is uncapped and unthrottled with no usage threshold at all — no shaping, no peak-hour step-down and no GB limit published anywhere, and every package is tagged "Uncapped / Unthrottled" in Mweb's own product data. Mweb does run usage thresholds, but only on its legacy ADSL and its LTE products, never on fibre. The fine print is about conduct rather than volume: the Acceptable Use Policy says bandwidth is managed "to the best of our ability during peak periods" as a best-effort service, bars using an uncapped line abusively (think round-the-clock streaming or FTP transfers heavy enough to affect other customers), and limits home packages to personal use — no reselling, no sharing and no running servers, unless you're on a business package. Break those and Mweb can rate-limit, suspend or terminate the service. mweb.co.za
Telkom
Unshaped / Unthrottled
Telkom has removed the old fair-usage thresholds from its current fibre products: Core, Endless, Stream Connect, Prepaid and third-party network bundles are all uncapped with no FUP and no throttling. The one exception is the entry-level Easy Connect product on Openserve Web Connect. group.telkom.co.za (PDF)
Vox
Unshaped / Unthrottled
Vox home fibre is unshaped and unthrottled with no fair-use policy on nearly every network — the one exception is Openserve-based packages. Vox's Acceptable Use Policy reserves standard anti-abuse rights (for genuinely excessive or improper usage) but sets no data thresholds. vox.co.za
Webafrica
Unshaped / Unthrottled
Webafrica doesn't shape your connection — you decide how to use your bandwidth. Vumatel, Frogfoot, Octotel, MetroFibre and Zoom Fibre packages carry no FUP at all. webafrica.co.za
Getting connected
Installation Times & Routers Compared
How long until you’re online, and do you need to buy a router? Side by side, per ISP — straight from each provider’s published info.
ISP Installation time WiFi router
Afrihost
Installation time
About 1 week on average. afrihost.com
WiFi router
WiFi 6· AX3000 4.4/5 (88 reviews, Huawei AX3 · Takealot)
A free-to-use dual-band WiFi router is included with selected networks — typically a Huawei AX3 (WS7100) or WS5200, or a TP-Link EX511, depending on stock. A once-off R249 delivery fee applies, and if you ever cancel, the router is yours to keep. afrihost.com
Atomic Access
Installation time
New installations are generally completed within 1–2 weeks, and can be as quick as 2 business days where feasible. Reconnections on an existing line take only 1–2 business days. atomic.co.za
WiFi router
WiFi 5· AC1300 4.8/5 (13 reviews, Reyee RG-EW1300G · Takealot)
Routers aren't bundled by default — bring your own (any router with a WAN port works) or buy one from Atomic with free next-business-day delivery: Reyee RG-EW1300G (WiFi 5, R799), Reyee RG-EW3000GX (WiFi 6, R970) or Reyee RG-EW7200BE-PRO (WiFi 7, R3,449). atomic.co.za
Axxess
Installation time
The installation lead time depends on the fibre network in your area. Once the line is installed, the network takes up to 5 days to activate it, and Axxess connects you within 24 hours after that. If your home already has an active line, you're connected shortly after signing up. help.axxess.co.za
WiFi router
WiFi 5· AC1200
A free-to-use WiFi router (valued up to R5,000) is included with selected networks — typically a Tenda AC10 dual-band. The router stays Axxess property (R899 if not returned within 21 days of cancelling) and becomes yours after 36 months of service. Prefer WiFi 6? A TP-Link EX511 can be bought for R999 once-off. help.axxess.co.za
Mweb
Installation time
About 14 days. Frogfoot carries a caveat none of Mweb's other networks do: Mweb covers Frogfoot's full setup cost, but cancel within 12 months of going active and you become liable for clawback and cancellation costs. mweb.co.za
WiFi router
WiFi 6· AX3000
Every Mweb fibre package since March 2024 includes a free-to-use router, and the standard model is the ZTE H3601P — a WiFi 6 AX3000 unit worth around R1 000 that ships pre-configured. Some customers get a Zyxel EMG3525, EX3301 or TP-Link EC230-G1 instead, depending on stock. It's insured while you're a customer: if it breaks, is stolen or takes a lightning hit, Mweb replaces it free up to twice. It stays Mweb's property though — cancel and you have 20 days to return it with all its cables to Nology in Cape Town or Centurion (drop-off free, courier at your cost). Miss that window and you're billed its full retail value, after which it's yours but no longer under warranty or insured. help.mweb.co.za
Telkom
Installation time
On average within 10 working days. group.telkom.co.za
WiFi router
WiFi 5· AC1200
Telkom's 12- and 24-month fibre contracts include a router and installation — typically the D-Link DSL-G2562DG (AC1200 with gigabit ports and VoIP). Easy Connect, Stream Connect and Prepaid fibre ship without a router: the WiFi-enabled ONT does the job instead. online.telkom.wds.co
Vox
Installation time
Around 14 working days on average, once the fibre network confirms your home is ready to connect. vox.co.za
WiFi router
WiFi 5· AC1200 4.7/5 (45 reviews, MikroTik hAP ac2 · Takealot)
A free-to-use MikroTik WiFi router is included — couriered to you pre-configured, with no monthly router fee. It remains Vox property and is collected if you cancel. vox.co.za
Webafrica
Installation time
Most installations are completed within 7–21 working days (about 14 on average), plus up to 5 business days for activation after the physical install. Webafrica's 'activation promise' credits your account R999 if selected networks miss their installation window. knowledge.webafrica.co.za
WiFi router
WiFi 6· AX3000
Webafrica's standard free-to-use router is the ZTE H3601P (gigabit wired, shipped pre-configured — just plug it in); some customers receive a Zyxel EMG3525/T50B instead. The router stays Webafrica property: return it within 20 days if you cancel, or be billed its retail value. knowledge.webafrica.co.za
