Our Mission

What we're here to do

Make fast and lekker internet less confusing for South Africans, so non-techies actually get the best and right deal, not just the loudest one.

Our Story

It started as a spreadsheet

Fibre Tiger was started in December 2016 by Jacques du Rand, in a Cape Town complex that had just been lit up by Openserve. Like most South Africans at the time, he was frustrated trying to compare fibre packages. Every ISP's site looked different, every "deal" had asterisks, and nobody could just tell you which package was actually best for your line.

So he did what any stubborn ex-search engineer would do: dumped the price spreadsheets he'd been collecting online, added a filter or two, and pointed friends at it. That spreadsheet (minus the spreadsheet) is still the heart of what we do.

Nearly a decade later Fibre Tiger covers uncapped fibre, LTE, 5G and WiFi packages across every major South African network and ISP. Independent. Team is small, deliberately. Mission hasn't changed.

↳ You'll sometimes see us written as "FibreTiger", "FiberTiger" or "Fiber Tiger". Same site, all good. Officially though it's Fibre Tiger.

    Milestones

  1. 2016

Fibre Tiger launches as a Cape Town side-project after Openserve goes live in Jacques' complex.

↳ As covered by News24 (Jan 2017): "New online tool compares SA fibre internet prices"

  2. 2018

Coverage map added, finally answering the only question that actually matters: "Can I even get fibre?"

↳ As covered by MyBroadband (May 2018): "How many fibre infrastructure and service providers there are in South Africa"

  3. 2019

Registered as TIGER CONNECT (PTY) LTD (trading as “Fibre Tiger”) with the CIPC.

↳ As covered by MyBroadband (Mar 2019): "Making it easier to find the best fibre or ADSL deal"

  4. 2021

Expanded into LTE & 5G comparisons as load-shedding-proof options take off.

  5. 2023

Streaming & VPN guides launched to round out the "what to do once you have fibre" question.

  6. 2026

Tracking 10+ fibre networks and 7+ ISPs, still independent.

The Team

The people behind Fibre Tiger

Jacques du Rand

Founder & Editor

South African builder, ex-search engineer, and the person typing on the other end of info@fibretiger.co.za. Spent many years as Head of Search at PriceCheck.co.za (South Africa's largest price comparison site). That's roughly where the "let's just compare the things properly" instinct comes from.

Founded Fibre Tiger in 2016 after one too many hours squinting at ISP pricing pages. Writes most of what you read here.

Active on the MyBroadband Forum (handle rawoke) since 2009. That's 17 years of arguing about South African ISPs, fibre rollouts and broadband infrastructure with the country's biggest broadband community.

Personal ISP & network history · updated 2026

I'm not just writing about fibre — I've been living on it for 7+ years. My line runs over Openserve (B13000XXXX) at home, and I've cycled through most of the major ISPs myself in roughly this order before landing on Afrihost (A09172XXX) about a year ago.

  1. ISPAfrika first ISP
  2. Cool Ideas
  3. Supersonic
  4. Vox
  5. Afrihost ~1 year, current

Network: Openserve (B13000XXXX) · 7+ years on the same physical line · Location: Cape Town

How we make money: if you sign up to one of these packages through a link on Fibre Tiger, we may earn a small affiliate commission. It's at no extra cost to you, and it never changes which deal we recommend or the order packages are ranked in.

For the record: this is Fibre Tiger (with the British "Fibre"). Plenty of people search for us as something else and that's totally fine. Same team, same site, same email.
