Youtube Originals & Karate Kid

Streaming is so much better than having to channel surf. First, you have access to a much larger selection of original programming through streaming – and you can watch whatever you want on-demand, rather than having to wait a week for an episode for something you didn’t really want to watch in the first place.

There are plenty of reasons why you should rather be streaming. But when it comes to what options you should use for your streaming needs, it can be pretty hard to settle on one.

YouTube Premium (known as YouTube Red in the past) is one alternative – although one that’s not (technically) available for South African subscribers, unless you might be using a VPN to access it.

Here’s more about YouTube Premium and the YouTube Originals you can find online.

WTF is YouTube Premium?

YouTube Premium is a new service launched by YouTube that allows you to stream paid content through the channel, with a  lot of it being YouTube Original shows that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s kind of like Netflix, but with a different variety of shows entirely – and it costs $11.99 per month.

YouTube Premium Features

Why should people be subscribing to the service at all? Here are some of the features that are advertised with YouTube Premium – and it’s up to users whether or not the features make it worth it.

  • Watching Offline: A lot of streaming sites won’t offer you the ability to download anything in order to watch it later, but YouTube Premium gives you the chance to save and watch offline for 30 days.
  • No Ads: If you’ve ever been irritated by an ad on YouTube – and, well, that’s everyone – you’ll wish you could just get rid of the ads, and a subscription with YouTube Premium lets you do just that, but is it really worth it?
  • Background Play: Also advertised with the service is a thing they call “background play” that allows you to “play videos in the background” - can’t you do that anyway?

Along with this, they’re offering YouTube Originals, Kids, Gaming and Music if you want a little more.

YouTube Originals

So, just what does YouTube Originals have to offer, and is it really worth the subscription fee? Some would say yes – at least, if you’d prefer to get your programming legally rather than off a dodgy torrent site where it might be dubbed in a language you can’t identify or filmed in a movie theatre.

  • Cobra Kai
  • Step Up: High Water
  • Broke
  • Lifeline
  • Paranormal Action Squad
  • Sherwood

Of all the listed series, we’d have to say that Cobra Kai is our favourite from the list. The show picks up the story where the Karate Kid movie franchise left off, and some of the original cast (including Macchio) have come back to reprise their roles for the show. It’s something to look forward to whether you’re a fan of the original movie series – or you’re just discovering the wonder of the Karate Kid.
